Please get in touch to plan for a visit for either this school year or next:

Our Approach

We seek to nurture the child’s natural love of learning through a prepared environment which encourages discovery and self-paced learning. Our children develop their abilities and talents, pursue their interests and achieve ever-increasing levels of independence. Our main objectives are to provide opportunities to explore and learn in a warm caring environment and to help the children achieve the confidence and skills to succeed in subsequent school experiences.

An enriched program is offered which provides for the gradual development of the intellect as well as for physical, social and emotional growth. Included in our daily curriculum are math, science, singing/music, geography, Spanish and reading and writing preparation. We practice yoga once per week on varying days. We give individual lessons and there are both large and small group experiences so that children become used to any style of teaching in subsequent “mainstream” schools. Most of the work is “hands-on” using our Montessori equipment so very little paper work will be brought home.

Prospective Families

If you are looking to get your child ready for kindergarten – and for life – we offer a social and academic program that will respect and foster your child’s development.

Our only pre-entry requirement is that your child must be toilet trained or really very close to it.

How many days per week?

You can choose to send your child to school 3, 4 or 5 days per week and you are free to pick which days. We require a minimum of 3 days to ensure your child’s social integration. Once you have picked which days, schedule changes may prove difficult as we try to keep the number of children balanced each day. We will try to work with you though to help meet your needs.

Daily Schedule

We are a morning program. School is open from 9:00am to 12:30pm. We offer early drop-off between 8:30 and 9:00am for an additional fee.

September 2018 – May 2019 (August is pro-rated)

3 days per week: $285 per month
4 days per week: $ 350 per month
5 days per week: $405 per month

One time registration fee: $60

Application Process

It is very easy:

  1. Please contact us to plan for a visit together with your child.
  2. Visit: This is a great opportunity to see Montessori’s pedagogy at work. You will see our location and meet everyone while your child will have the opportunity to interact with the other children and participate in our program.
  3. If you decide to have your child participate in the Blacksburg Montessori School, then you will fill out an application form.
  4. If there is an open spot your child can start immediately. Otherwise your application will go on the waiting list and we will be in touch as soon as we see an opening.

What will you see during your visit?

Why Blacksburg Montessori School

Our Mission And Vision

At Blacksburg Montessori School, we attempt to prepare children for all that future schooling may present. The room is planned to allow children to develop their abilities and talents whilst also increasing their independence and social awareness.

Blacksburg Montessori children will eventually become mature sensitive adults with the skills to be true leaders.

Montessori Pedagogy

Maria Montessori developed her method of education after working with children with intellectual challenges. She saw what could be achieved by hands-on learning and decided to expand her techniques and make them accessible to all children.

In a mixed-age classroom there is an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits and respect for the child’s social, physical and emotional development. All this is aided by the specially designed Montessori equipment and the carefully planned environment.

Meet the Team

Lynne Knox, Director and teacher, and Marilou Akers, teacher, have been working together for more than 20 years.
